Written by two mathematics teachers who are also quilters, Mathematical Quilts contains more than 50 blackline master activities in which students discover the underlying mathematics concepts of designs the authors have used to create stunning quilts.
Students explore a wide range of topics including the Pythagorean theorem, Fibonacci sequences, tesselations and tiling, and more. They improve their visualization skills by analyzing and comparing relationships among shapes. As students find connections between mathematics concepts and design elements, they gain invaluable problem-solving experience - similar to that which the authors themselves encountered while designing the beautiful quilt patterns which serve as the basis for the book's activities.

Mathematical Quilts is divided into four thematic sections that group quilts with similar designs: "The Golden Ratio Quilts," "The Spiral Quilts," "The Right Triangle Quilts," and "The Tiling Quilts."
Each section includes:
- an introduction to the section theme,
- a series of lessons that highlight the math concepts incorporated into the quilt designs,
- research activities and technology extensions (including internet investigations),
- concluding exercises culminating in a re-creation of each quilt pattern using paper, fabric, or a computer drawing program, and
- extensive teacher notes, solutions to activities, and a bibliography.
