At last--an origami book designed specifically for mathematics classrooms!
Origami books are typically written by origami experts and aimed at origami enthusiasts. This art form lends itself wonderfully to teaching mathematics, but until now it's been up to the individual teacher to find ways to effectively incorporate it into a math class. Unfolding Mathematics with Unit Origami now offers the perfect means to do so!
This copymaster activity book is designed to complement math curricula at both the middle and high school levels. Its elegant illustrations and detailed folding and assembly instructions enable you and your students to create beautiful and fascinating 3-D origami models. Activities are organized by increasing difficulty level, with both mathematical concepts and complexity of folding sequences taken into account.
Through origami folding sequences, basic mathematical ideas reveal themselves including algebraic and angle relationships, and different types of two and three-dimensional symmetry. Student interest will be engaged and student ability will be challenged and rewarded. You may choose activities from anywhere in the book, but if you work through the activities in the order they are presented, you'll cover a surprisingly broad range of mathematical topics.
Most of the 16 lessons can be completed in one class period each and offer opportunities for group work, journal writing, and projects. Autobiographical vignettes by origami artists introduce students to origami cultural history and prompt students to discuss their own experiences with the art form.
