Solving Linear Equations in "Equations Environment"
In this mode, Virtual Tiles is an invaluable tool for helping students understand the process of equation solving.
When solving equations, students should think of each "working area" as one side of a balance. They drag and place tiles so that each "working area" visually represents one side of an equation. Next, they should choose "Stay Equal" and "Show Algebra" to view the mathematical expressions and to set them as equivalent. |
From this point on, any tile that is added to one side of the equation will be added to the other and the algebraic expressions underneath will change accordingly. Students can drag tiles from the upper left part of the screen to the "working areas" in order to eliminate and isolate variables and to solve for the variable which remains. |
