Virtual Tiles is a program designed to provide students with a concrete model for operations with integers and polynomials. Evaluating expressions, combining like terms, solving equations, applying the distributive property, multiplying polynomials, dividing polynomials, and factoring, all have concrete models.

This program will help your students to grasp abstract concepts and visualize operations. Virtual Tiles allows students to construct their own meanings for many complicated concepts. Students can factor expressions with Virtual Tiles that very few could do using any other techniques.

Colorful and animated, these tiles can be dragged, flipped, and manipulated on screen in one of three environments:
  • Addition Environment
  • Multiplication Environment
  • Equations Environment

This program provides all of the benefits of working with algebra tiles or blocks with many added advantages. Virtual Tiles:
  • are automatically distributed to students as soon as they open the program
  • are much faster and more precise than moving tiles around by hand
  • can automate many features — labeling dimensions, showing equivalence, etc.
  • can be used as a symbolic calculator
  • can accommodate much larger and more complicated examples than algebra tiles since Virtual Tiles are in two variables and there are virtually an unlimited number of expressions
  • makes turning over tiles as simple as a double click of the mouse
  • simplifies classroom management — tiles are automatically distributed, can’t be destroyed or lost, and don’t have to be collected

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students can use Virtual Tiles to:

  • manipulate tiles in three environments — Addition, Multiplication, and Equations
  • model integers, variables, algebraic expressions, and linear equations
  • add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers
  • simplify expressions by combining like terms
  • evaluate expressions
  • solve linear equations in one variable
  • isolate one variable in linear equations containing two variables
  • multiply polynomials
  • divide polynomials
  • complete the square in expressions of the form ax2 + bxy + cy2 + ey + f
  • factor polynomials of the form ax2 + bxy + cy2 + ey + f (including common factors, difference of squares, perfect squares, all forms of trinomial factoring, and factoring by grouping

ACTIVITIES

Use Virtual Tiles to introduce and demonstrate concepts in large group settings or with individual students. The User’s Guide provides step-by-step activities for the following topics so that teachers and students can quickly become familiar with the program:

    Addition Environment

    • Adding Integers
    • Subtracting Integers
    • Evaluating Expressions
    • Combining Like Terms

    Multiplication Environment

    • Multiplying Integers
    • Dividing Integers
    • Multiplying Polynomials
    • Dividing Polynomials
    • Completing the Square
    • Factoring Polynomials

    Equations Environment

    • Solving Linear Equations

Supplementary Student Worksheet masters and teacher resource materials are also included.
